LOOKING AFTER YOUR BULLDOG

Grooming
A bulldog does not need much grooming, if you groom it a few times a weeks it should prevent too mush shedding.
Personally I use a brush to loosen the hairs followed by a rubber brush.
I finish off with a lamb skin glove to get rid of all the loose hairs and that leaves the coat nice and shiny.

Washing
If you have a bulldogs with a lot of tear stains, that can give problems with the surrounding skin. It can get irritated and the hair will be discoloured and stained. It is very important to keep these areas clean with daily washes.
Some can just do this once a week. Personally I do it every morning and it is our daily routine .

I start by washing the face with luke warm water added hibiscrub.
I wash each eye bring very careful, the nose folds and around the nose. I dry the area thoroughly and rub in Zink paste 40%.
That keeps the skin free from any irritation.
One of my Bulldogs has very bad tear stains and wet skin folds so I wash her 2 times a day and use a cream called Super Whitening Gel ( bought on the net ) This keeps the hairs dry and takes out the discolouration.

I finish off by rubbing non perfumed baby oil on to the mussel and nose this leaves the nose nice and moist.

I only bathe my Bulldogs when it is necessary , too much bathing is not good for the coat or skin. I wash them in a very mild shampoo once every 3 months, except for when I showing them or if they have really been rolling around in the mud.

Nails, teeth and ears
Keep an eye on your dogs nails and do not let them get too long, this can be very painfull .
The jew claw should always be short so not to snag on anything and get pulled out. I cut the nails once every 3 weeks, that way the nail never gets too long and hard to cut.
Always start nail cutting straight away so your puppy gets used to it. A treat and a play time afterwards and nail cutting will not be a problem.

Check you dogs mouth and teeth and there is lots of room in that big mouth where wood and bits of old food can hide. I check them when they have been playing outside, there is nearly always something to find in there .I brush their teeth once a month and use toothbrushes from Greenies once a week, they are to be eaten and chewed on and the bullies like that.

Clean the ears often with a piece of cotton wool, you can use ear rinse to loosen the dirt in the ear. Check often so as to minimise ear problems such as infections and yeast growths. Use bath time to wash the ears with warm water and cotton wool.

Paws and pads
If it there is snow or ice outside it is a good idea to put paw wax under your dogs paws, that can prevent any irritation.
On return from your walk in the winter time you can wash the paws and make sure there is so sand of salt that can cause irritation or cuts If there are cuts you can put non perfumes cream on them.

If you want to show your dog
It is a good idea to learn your puppy the right way to stand.. You can do this on a daily basis just by standing him and praising…it does not have to take long. You can gradually work longer with your puppy until it becomes routine. You get also go to ring training in you local club for a small fee. It is good training for both you and your dog.

These are just a few suggestions based on my own experiences … maybe you have your own ideas… just try as you go along..thats what I do ;o)

Good luck!
